Types of Whale Strandings I

Single Strandings:
Involving only one whale.
1) Type One
These whales are generally in good health except for a severe, temporary affliction. the pain caused by the temporary illness, usually an intense infestation of parasitic worms, is thought to be so severe that the whale beaches itself in desperation.
Symptoms: Erratic behaviour, thrashing of tail flukes or bumping its head, is a good indicator of whales in this category.
2) Type Two
Old and infirm whales who, at the end of their natural lives, because of failing strength simply cannot resist heavy swells and inshore currents.
Generally these whales are found to be diseased and in poor health.
Symptoms: Obvious injury, uneven swimming, bad breath and breathing difficulties. Often observed lagging behind their school, as they can no longer keep up, they eventually become victims to inshore currents. When rescued they often ground again somewhere else. Their intense discomfort and pain should be ended humanely as possible by a Department of Conservation Officer.
3) Type Three
Whales which come ashore through a navigation mistake. If rescued, they have a good chance of survival. Basically healthy, but may be confused and erratic in their behaviour. In the absence of symptoms such as type 1 and 2 above, these whales should be assumed healthy and be rescued.
Migrating whales may be confused by parts of the our coast which disorientate them.
4) Type Four
Mother and calf stranding. when a mother strands, through illness, old age or a navigational mistake, her calk usually strands alongside. If the mother is healthy, both have a good chance of survival.
With most whales, if the calf is young (less than 60% of its motherݒ�s size) and is still suckling it would probably have no hope of survival without its mother. If the mother appears healthy both animals should be rescued.
Similarly, if the calf is reasonably large (greater than 60% of its mother��s length or weaned) it should be rescued as it should survive on its own.
